The HIFU (Non-Surgical Prostate Cancer Treatment)

Technique is simply the destruction of the cancerous tissue in the prostate by heating it with sound waves. In the treatment of prostate cancer, which is very common in men;
• non-surgical method,
• non-invasive robotic method,
• local method focusing only on the tumor,
• less side effect method
When it is said, HIFU treatment procedure often comes to mind among the treatment options.
Non-Surgical Cancer Treatment: HIFU Technique
High Intensity Focused Ultrasound, or HIFU, is an FDA-approved, minimally invasive procedure for the treatment of prostate cancer that offers personalized treatment and significantly reduced side effects.

HIFU uses non-ionizing ultrasonic waves to heat tissue without the need for any incisions. HIFU can be used to increase blood or lymph flow or to destroy tissue such as tumors.
This technology is similar to ultrasonic imaging, but instead of pulsed waves, lower frequency and continuous waves are used to achieve the required thermal doses.
    Working Logic of HIFU Technique
With the High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) technique, it is aimed to treat only the cancerous area instead of removing the entire prostate. What is done with this treatment is to prevent the problems that may be experienced in the sexual life of the patient and urinary incontinence without removing the secreted glands around the prostate and closing the channels coming from the testis.

    Application and Method

Ultrasound energy or sound waves are transmitted to the prostate via a spoon-shaped applicator placed from the anal region.
Sound waves focus on desired points within the prostate, identified by MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) and confirmed by ultrasound.
The applicator's intrarectal position is monitored in 3D and instantaneously, which is essential for real-time imaging, safe and accurate noninvasive targeting, and treatment monitoring.

    Advantages of HIFU Technique

    • Cancer tissue can be intervened without damaging the surrounding organs.
    • With the possibility of outpatient treatment, the treatment is completed on the same day.
    • It can be reapplied at a later time, if necessary.
    • It is non-invasive. There is no surgery or blood loss.
    • It does not contain radiation, the patient is not exposed to radiation.
    • It is a personalized, targeted therapy.
    • It has fewer side effects than other treatment methods.
    • There may still be a chance of surgery or radiotherapy in recurrences after HIFU.

    Frequently Asked Questions

1Can HIFU be used in benign prostate enlargement?
HIFU is a treatment method applied only in prostate cancer.
2Can it be applied in later ages?
HIFU can be applied to men of all ages with prostate cancer, depending on the patient's suitability for treatment.
3Is the entire prostate destroyed by ultrasonic waves?
In the HIFU process, only the cancerous tissues of the prostate are targeted and the temperature is increased only with ultrasonic waves specific to that point. In this way, the surrounding tissues are not damaged and the prostate is ensured to perform all its functions.
