Urinary Tract Obstruction

Urine is formed as a result of the filtration of waste materials in our body through the kidneys. The urine formed in the kidneys reaches the bladder by moving through the channel called the ureter. However, in some individuals, urine coming out of the kidneys is blocked at the ureterovesical junction, which is the lower junction of the ureteral canal that connects to the bladder, and it cannot progress to the bladder.

In this case, if it is bilateral, the urine, which should normally accumulate in the bladder, begins to regress from the junction of the ureteral canal to the bladder, towards the kidneys and accumulate there. The stenosis seen at the ureterovesical junction where the canal connects to the bladder and prevents urine from reaching the bladder is called UV (ureterovesical) stenosis. Ureterovesical stenosis is among the kidney diseases seen in newborns and children. It can be said that ureterovesical stenosis is a congenital structural disorder in most cases. For the diagnosis and treatment of the disease, the factors causing this discomfort should be investigated and an appropriate treatment plan should be established for the patient after the diagnosis is made.

    Frequently Asked Questions

1What can I do to help relieve symptoms of ureteral obstruction?
If you have symptoms of ureteral obstruction, you should see your doctor right away. Symptoms can get worse if left untreated. Only a doctor can diagnose and treat ureteral obstruction.
2What are the side effects of the treatment for ureteral obstruction?
The side effects of alpha-blockers include dizziness, headaches and fainting. Side effects of finasteride, the medication used to shrink the prostate, include decreased sexual desire and increased hair growth. Surgery to remove the obstruction or place a stent can have side effects such as discomfort and increased risk of infection.
3When should I call my doctor about ureteral obstruction?
If you have signs of ureteral obstruction, you should call your doctor right away. Symptoms may be mild at first but can get worse quickly and can be very serious.
4What is the prognosis for patients who have ureteral obstruction?
The outlook for ureteral obstruction depends on whether the kidneys were damaged while urine was unable to drain. If doctors fix the blockage before serious kidney damage occurs, ureteral obstruction doesn’t usually have serious long-term effects. In severe cases, kidney failure and death can result from a ureteral obstruction if it is left untreated.
